Set amid olive groves, on a hillside above the sea near Kornati National Park, this luxury eco-conscious adults-only (12+) island retreat has eight rooms, two gourmet restaurants, a spa and infinity pool. It offers unspoilt nature and pine-scented sea air. It’s also a member of Leading Hotels of the World.
Among Croatia’s most peaceful islands, Dugi Otok has a strange, streaky shape: it’s twenty-seven miles long, yet never more than three miles wide. To the south, forested cliffs plunge to empty bays; further north looms Veli Rat’s simple lighthouse. Just as eye-grabbing, and newly opened on an olive oil estate, are the eight bright rooms of the adults-only Villa Nai 3.3.
Carved into a rocky cliffside and built using stone extracted from the surrounding 100-year-old olive groves, the dreamy Dalmatian outpost that is Villa Nai 3.3 sits, almost invisibly, alongside an award-winning olive oil producer and organic farm. Eight rooms, two farm-to-fork restaurants and a soothing spa add to the allure.
Eight suites carved into the hillside of an ancient olive grove, on the wild Croatian island of Dugi Otok. Villa Nai 3.3 is striking yet also hidden, on an island with only 2000 inhabitants. The grotto, almost Star Wars-esque style, is fringed by terracotta soil, pink-tinged local stone and generous slabs of marble. It feels like a private island retreat, in Croatia.
The eight adult-only accommodations are bright and have been carefully sculpted into the hillside so as not to disturb the surrounding landscape. The two restaurants, Grotta 11.000 and 3.3, serve only the best dishes from local farms, prepared according to traditional Dugi Otok Island recipes.
The result is a remarkably soothing contemporary retreat. Following the topography of the hill – with a flat space carved above it for a helipad and tennis court – the airy, stone-built living spaces and eight suites open out onto shaded verandas, where meals are served. Inside, spacious suites are fitted with what Morovic proudly declares is “the best you can get”: marble bathrooms by Agape, sleek Italian Giorgetti furniture, Frette towels and vast soft beds by the Croatian company Cresp.
